Description

Alright, so technically this is my first fan art for Phantom Manor, which is a ride at Disneyland Paris (I really wanna go there so bad). But, being the obsessive phan I am, I decided to mash ALW Christine and Leroux Erik somewhere along the way. I don't even know when that happened.
Ok, so I just need to get this out of my system, so here goes nothing. Don't hate me for it and I don't mean to offend anyone in any way. I know the story of Phantom Manor (I'm not gonna explain the whole story, I'm just going to summarize): Melanie Ravenswood is supposed to get married to her fiancee, but he gets killed by the Phantom in the attic. Melanie waits and waits for him, never taking the wedding dress off. She eventually loses her mind and dies years and years later. So what is it that I'm going to discuss? The identity of the Phantom. I KNOW there's a lot of people who believe that it's Melanie's father, Henry Ravenswood. But for me, that's not the case. I find that the whole "it's her father trying to keep her trapped in the home forever" a little bit hilarious and at the same time, it feels as if there's a little bit of incestuous undertones in it. I don't know, that might just be me. But, what I'm trying to say is that the Phantom, to me, is just an evil entity (or a dead jealous lover, take your pick) that manifested in the house (after the earthquake), fell madly in love with Melanie, and proceeded to kill the fiancee so that Melanie would be his. I choose this version over the other one because a) it doesn't have incestuous undertones and b) it sticks closest to the Phantom of the Opera story. That was what Phantom Manor took inspiration from actually. I love the fact that Leroux's story majorly influenced the ride and I mean, why wouldn't they? Disneyland Paris is in Paris (DUH) and so is Palais Garnier (Paris Opera House), the main setting of Phantom of the Opera. The idea of unrequited love and heartbreak just speaks to me (probably cause I love masked, homicidal, musical geniuses without a nose). Yep, you heard me right. Erik (the Phantom) is born horribly deformed, his face looking like a skull (HE HAS NO NOSE) and his body looking like a skeleton. The Phantom from Phantom Manor reminds me exactly of Erik (probably because he's a dapper skeleton, but whatever) and he represents darkness. Melanie reminds me of Christine because, if you've heard the Phantom Manor soundtrack, she has a beautiful operatic soprano voice and she's innocent and represents light and she's also tormented by the Phantom (it happens to Christine too, but you gotta read the book). It's sad that most people disregard the dead jealous lover plot and head straight to "it's her father back from the dead and trying to keep her trapped" plot. It's everyone's own decision. The dead jealous lover plot is my own decision.
Well, children, I could go on, but I'll decide to end it here. For now. :D Just remember: without Leroux's Phantom story, we wouldn't have the musical or Phantom Manor for that matter.

Christine and Erik belong to Leroux (and technically ALW cause he made the musical)
The Phantom and Melanie Ravenswood belong to Disneyland Paris (or Disney)
Art belongs to me
